Just as attendees in a stadium moving up and down as a wave makes its way around a venue do not gradually migrate away from their seats, particles vibrate in place while sound waves travel away from a source.
Sound waves are considered pressure waves because they repeatedly push particles into one another, as seen with amplifiers, where a circular drum pumps air in front of it hundreds of times per second to generate sound.
Alternating regions of high density—compressions—and low density—rarefactions—are produced within the materials that sound travels through as particles are pushed into one another and bounce back.
Compressions and rarefactions created by sound waves can be mathematically modeled to resemble the peaks and valleys of moving water waves.
A single sound wave spans two consecutive compressions or rarefactions, and the more waves are experienced by a listener per second, the higher the pitch of the perceived sound.
