Additional insights we found via The Pudding

  1. All waves involve vibrations, with amplitude describing the severity of the vibration—how far the wave energy pushes something away from its starting location—and frequency referring to the rate at which those vibrations occur.

  2. For sound, amplitude corresponds to loudness and can be graphed as the distance from the horizontal axis—the location particles start from before the wave energy vibrates them up and down.

  3. Sounds can differ in their amplitude and frequency—what we perceive as pitch—creating different curved waveforms.

  4. When sounds combine, it is the same as overlapping waveforms, where amplitudes add up at each location along the horizontal axis to create a new synthesized waveform.

  5. Just as adding two odd numbers creates something with a different property—an even number—synthesized waveforms can take different shapes than the curved waveforms they are created from, including triangle, square, and sawtooth, with each sounding unique.

  6. In music, chords are synthesized waveforms consisting of at least three distinct musical notes that overlap and see their amplitudes combined.
