The bullwhip was the first human-made object to break the sound barrier, producing a small sonic boom heard as a crack when flicked quickly.

Additional insights we found via The Royal Institution

  1. When its handle is swung, even in a small arc, the whip's outermost tip must travel much faster to keep up with the rest of the swinging object while moving across a wider arc.

  2. The speed of a whip's tip often exceeds the speed of sound, which is related to how fast particles vibrate, creating a gradual build-up of pressure and compressed air that cannot move out of the tip's way quickly enough.

  3. The compressions form a shockwave that lags behind the supersonic tip, heard as a loud, explosive sound after the tip passes a listener.

  4. Just as a fast-moving car creates a partial vacuum behind it by pushing air out of its way as it passes—evidenced by leaves following in a car's wake—the supersonic tip also creates a trailing partial vacuum, which collapses with a softer popping sound once it slows.
