The unit of decibel, or a tenth of a bel, was developed at Bell Labs to quantify power loss in telecommunication transmissions and was named in honor of Alexander Graham Bell.
The scale is logarithmic, with a sound of 50 decibels being 1,000 times (or 10³) more intense than one of 20 decibels, because 50 is 30 times greater than 20.
