Listen to a reconstruction of the sound of the Big Bang—the first sound of the universe.

As gravity tried to bring matter closer together in the early universe, its high temperature produced an outward pressure that caused it to expand. These competing forces caused matter to vibrate and produce the equivalent of sound waves, which spread outward as the universe expanded and cooled, serving as relics of dark energy's history.

Just after the Big Bang, the high-density universe prevented light from traveling very far before being absorbed and emitted repeatedly by free-floating particles. As the universe expanded, electrons and protons combined to form hydrogen, thereby freeing up space for light to travel unimpeded, creating the background light we observe today.

About 400,000 years after the Big Bang, the universe cooled enough for atoms to form, releasing a burst of orange-hued thermal radiation that has since redshifted into microwaves we now detect as the CMB. No matter where you point a detector in space, the CMB signal is always there.

The Big Bang theory describes the universe beginning 13.7 billion years ago as an ultradense point, followed by stages, like the radiation- and matter-dominated eras. Each era was responsible for a unique element, such as the cosmic microwave background and atomic nuclei.

A timeline for everything, from the Big Bang to the beginnings of life on Earth. This article lays out, in spans of billions of years, what was happening in the universe as it became the universe. Starting from the Planck era, the earliest known meaningful time, to the probable "Big Crunch" 30 billion years from now, see how the universe has existed and persisted.

Rooted in Lemaître’s 1927 idea of a growing universe and confirmed by Hubble’s redshift data, the theory is backed by evidence like cosmic microwave background radiation—remnants of the universe’s fiery birth detected in the 1960s. The radiation was first misidentified as interference from pigeon droppings inside a telescope antenna.

The cosmic microwave background radiation and the observed expansion of the universe suggest that the cosmos began from a tiny, dense state, whose resulting properties we see throughout space. While physics allows for cyclical expansions and crunches, ongoing inflationary aeons, and localized inflation to create bubble universes, evidence for these alternatives has not yet been found.

Multiple independent lines of evidence—galactic redshift, element ratios, cosmic microwave background radiation, and large-scale cosmic structure—all point to a single origin about 13.8 billion years ago. Before Edwin Hubble, many astronomers believed the entire universe was contained within our galaxy.

The theories behind the Big Bang suggest the process of the universe beginning to the creation of stable, neutral atoms took just half a million years. But the transition from such atoms to star formation took surprisingly much longer, upwards of 100 million years. Why? This deep dive explores the science behind the unique physical composition of the so-called cosmic dark ages.

While we have strong evidence that the universe expanded from an extremely hot, dense state, we can only trace events back to a tiny fraction of a second after that point. Earlier stages, like inflation and potential force unification, remain unproven and unobservable with current tools.

The term “Big Bang” was initially coined by a skeptic of the theory, but the name stuck despite the theory not depicting a "bang." The event took place everywhere in the universe at once, and the theory explains the abundance of hydrogen and helium in the universe.

In 1931, Georges Lemaître presented his radical idea that the universe came from a “primeval atom,” challenging the long-held belief that the universe had always existed. Einstein initially dismissed Lemaître’s work as having “abominable” physical insight, only to accept it later.

As ripples in spacetime, gravitational waves do not produce sound, which is the perception of specific vibrations in matter (e.g., vocal cords vibrating air molecules). The "chirp" of gravitational waves comes instead from converting the spacetime ripples into sound waves that the human ear can hear.

The James Webb Space Telescope has discovered a galaxy that formed just 280 million years after the Big Bang. It is another in a series of increasingly ancient galaxies that, according to current formation models, should not have been able to form so quickly after the birth of the universe.

A student-faculty team at Colgate University modeled the event as occurring months after the conventional Big Bang and determined the potential gravitational wave signal that would have been left behind. Future gravitational wave detectors are expected to be sensitive enough to observe this signal, if it exists.

Traditional physics breaks down at the moment of the Big Bang, but quantum theory suggests that “empty” space is never truly empty. In 1973, physicist Edward Tryon proposed that our universe began from a quantum energy blip in the quantum vacuum.

Rewinding the universe to the big bang compresses all matter, energy, space, and time into a single point, necessitating a model that combines general relativity with quantum mechanics. Although physicists understand time to have begun when the universe did, a clear understanding of the mechanisms involved remains unclear.

Using data from the cosmic microwave background, which allows astronomers to model the universe's conditions since its earliest moments, yields a rate of expansion—the Hubble constant—lower than values obtained from multiple techniques measured locally at more recent timescales. Reconciling the discrepancy, known as the Hubble tension, will require a third independent measurement method between the two scales

In 1964, Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson accidentally detected the CMB while trying to eliminate persistent static from their radio antenna. The pair initially blamed the signal on pigeon droppings inside their antenna—cleaning it didn't help, but it did win them a Nobel Prize.

Researchers are simulating vacuum bubbles—the theorized starting points of universes—using quantum computers, digital models, and exotic lab setups to study how they form, expand, and possibly collide. One experiment aims to "blow" artificial universe-like bubbles inside ultra-cold quantum gases, potentially capturing real-time glimpses of cosmic birth processes in a lab.

Thanks to its advanced infrared sensors and massive mirror, the James Webb Space Telescope can see farther back in cosmic history than Hubble, revealing galaxies formed just 500 million years after the Big Bang.

The amount of visible matter in the universe is most accurately determined by measuring the cosmic microwave background. Quantities of dark matter and dark energy are calculated through the observed bending of light around galaxies and the expansion of the universe, respectively.

Think you know everything about black holes? You might be surprised. Thought of as massive vacuum cleaners sucking up everything in their cosmic path, black holes actually accrete matter at an incredibly slow pace. Yet, some black holes existed when the universe was only a few billion years young. Learn more in this BBC report.

The distribution of matter in the universe is not uniform, with interconnected threads of galaxy clusters surrounded by voids of empty space. Simulations of the universe show this is only possible within 13.8 billion years—the universe's age—if a foundational network of seeds—dark matter halos—were present to gravitationally attract visible matter.

Quasars form the core of active galaxies where supermassive black holes devour unimaginable amounts of matter. You can see a map of all 1.3 million of these objects with this 3D map. It was assembled with data from the Gaia spacecraft and shows how the spread of dark matter across space matches that described by the Cosmic Microwave Background.

After predicting black holes could evaporate and before undergoing a tracheotomy, Stephen Hawking conducted interviews in his voice, explaining phenomena like black holes and the Big Bang. In this clip, he explains how curiosity drives humans to become “masters of the universe.”

On February 11, 2016, scientists at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory announced the confirmed detection of ripples in spacetime, which were produced from the collision of two black holes 36 and 29 times the mass of the sun. The detection confirmed that gravitational waves travel at the speed of light, as predicted by Albert Einstein in 1915.

Stephen Hawking's PhD thesis mathematically showed that singularities—points of no volume and infinite density—are an expected feature of nature. It laid the theoretical groundwork for a model of the universe where everything originates from a single point.

This test represents the first time light travels entirely through an observatory's optical system and reaches its detectors, producing an image. Although the telescope's warped mirror was not discovered and announced until a month after first light, the issue was not responsible for the simplicity of the first light image.

A recording of a humpback whale was taken by scientists from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution near Bermuda in 1949, but forgotten for decades. When first captured, researchers didn't know what animal they were hearing, and therefore didn't catalogue the recording. The well-preserved audio was found by the team's archivist in 2025.

In the 1920s, Hubble showed that the Andromeda "nebula" was another galaxy. He later discovered that galaxies move away from us at speeds proportional to their distance—a breakthrough now known as the Hubble-Lemaître law, foundational to Big Bang cosmology.

Can you really appreciate just how small protons are, or how massive the universe is? To attempt to grasp it, watch this short video which zooms out from a young woman in California to the very limits of the cosmos using established scales. Then, dive deep into the atoms of her white blood cells for a fully-rounded effect.

The Hubble tension refers to mismatches in the calculated rate of expansion of the universe derived from different methods, such as supernova data and the cosmic microwave background. By allowing dark energy to become active at a different time, models of the universe on which some of these methods depend are revised, altering the calculated values.

One of the most surprising discoveries about our universe over the past century is that it's expanding. Even more surprising is that it’s speeding up, and scientists aren’t entirely sure why. The rate should be roughly dependent on the total energy contained in the universe, but calculations keep coming up short. Explore the so-called “Hubble Tension,” along with potential candidates to solve the riddle.

At the beginning of the universe, high-energy photons prevented atomic nuclei from combining with electrons to form neutral atoms. Rather than waiting for the universe to expand and cool completely, a rare quantum phenomenon—a two-photon transition—allowed neutral hydrogen atoms to form sooner, expediting the formation of stars, planets, and life.

Just as figure skaters spin faster by tucking in their arms, these celestial objects acquire high rates of spin from the collapse of the cores of massive stars. The star's rotation spins its magnetic field, generating beams of radio waves from its magnetic poles. If either of these poles faces a detector, the signals can be picked up and converted to audio signals.

About 95% of the observable universe is made of substances whose composition is unknown, but most of what remains (4%) is in the form of clouds of hydrogen and helium, followed by gases and plasma within stars (0.5%) and neutrinos created in nuclear reactions (0.3%).

A New Mexico telescope has captured astronomical data for two decades to compile this map of the universe. Starting from earth and ending at the "edge" of the universe, it shows one slice of the cosmos: a total of 200,000 galaxies.

For perspective on the universe's absolute massiveness, watch this four-minute video. Beginning at a facility in Germany, the "camera" pulls back revealing the surrounding countryside, Germany itself, Europe, the Earth, and so on. At one point stars form galaxies and galaxies, at a distance, become as seemingly "small" as the individual stars.

To peer into the universe’s earliest moments, the Webb had to solve several immense engineering challenges: deploying a massive sun shield, surviving extreme cold, and stabilizing ultra-sensitive instruments. The telescope’s mirrors can adjust themselves in steps 10,000 times smaller than a human hair.
