Experts say the sound can be heard a block away from a pickleball court if the neighborhood is quiet.
Its loud volume is due mostly to the paddle, which vibrates like a drum.
The "pop" is not quite as loud for a player on the receiving side of the net; that's about 80 decibels, roughly the same as heavy traffic.
