Tennis balls get their bounce from pressurized nitrogen inside vulcanized rubber, made from heating natural rubber with sulfur to create molecular links that harden the material.

Additional insights we found via Compound Interest

  1. The nitrogen is under a pressure about 2.7 times that of the atmosphere at Earth's surface, which helps push nitrogen molecules from the interior to the exterior of the ball over time, gradually causing it to lose their bounce.

  2. The exterior of a tennis ball is made of wool and nylon, colored with a dye called Basic Yellow 40.

  3. Rackets, formerly made out of wood that would break or warp, are now made of carbon fiber with resins.

  4. Racket strings in professional rackets are commonly made of polyester, but some strings are still made from cow intestines.
