Designing the pitches for the FIFA World Cup 2026 took turfgrass scientists about eight years, as they sought to create identical conditions for indoor and outdoor fields across North America at various altitudes and climates.

Additional insights we found via Short Wave

  1. FIFA requires natural grass pitches with sand-based root zones, hybrid reinforced with synthetic fibers, a ground irrigation system, and a vacuum ventilation system to remove water and prevent puddles.

  2. Researchers at the University of Tennessee developed a machine to simulate foot strikes using a 3D-printed foot and to collect data on forces and traction for any type of grass.

  3. A year before the tournament, sod was grown on a Denver sod farm atop plastic, and then harvested at night, rolled up, and loaded onto refrigerated trucks for transport to five dome stadiums.

  4. To ensure uniformity in how players feel on cold- and warm-season grasses, scientists used growth regulators and nitrogen fertilizers to control vertical growth, density, and rigidity, and conducted bounce tests to establish ideal mowing heights for each grass.
