Through osmosis, water naturally moves from within cells to surrounding saltier fluids to balance salt concentrations across cell membranes, which can cause cells to dehydrate and die.
Euryhaline organisms—those that can survive in environments with a wide range of salt concentrations—can alter their gill and kidney functions to actively regulate salt content in their bodies, such as salmon that mature in salty oceans but lay eggs in freshwater.
