Many of the microbial life in the Great Barrier Reed are photosynthetic and form the foundational level of food webs by being eaten by krill and other zooplankton, which are then consumed by animals.
Continued monitoring of the Great Barrier Reef's microbiome will help researchers learn how microorganisms respond to climate change, human activity, bleaching, and other environmental factors.
