A 2023 analysis of research on keystone species suggested that they fall into five archetypes: large carnivores such as sharks; invertebrate consumers such as sea urchins; marine vertebrates such as bream; invertebrates that shape their environment, such as honeybees; and vertebrate environmental modifiers, such as prairie dogs.
Subjectivity in defining a keystone species has made universal classification of a species as a keystone difficult, with some research even suggesting that no microorganisms qualify as keystone species.
