Gut bacteria are evolving and can acquire as many as 100 new genes per year, on average. (Paywall may apply.)

Findings

Additional insights we found via The New York Times

  1. The extent to which new genes are acquired by gut microbes depends partly on an individual's diet, with fiber consumption leading to more gene acquisitions involved in fiber breakdown.

  2. Genes are swapped somewhat randomly among bacteria that neighbor each other in a process called horizontal gene transfer.

  3. A team of researchers has formed the Global Microbiome Conservancy, which aims to collect and biobank diverse microbes, as industrialization may eliminate some microbes. The project also aims to improve our understanding of how microbes affect human health.

  4. Altering the microbiome as a therapy remains challenging, though fecal transplants and probiotics have been used successfully for specific medical conditions.

  5. Multiple studies exploring if there is benefit to covering babies born via C-section in microbes from their mothers' birth canals—akin to what they would encounter if born vaginaly—have found it did not provide augmented autoimmune disorder protection or significantly alter the baby's microbiome.
