Climate resilience strategies, which help communities mitigate the effects of climate change, include painting roofs white, building clam gardens, harvesting fog, and feeding cows seaweed.

Additional insights we found via Part-Time Genius

  1. Besides major systemic solutions, such as a large-scale transition to renewable energy and beef- and dairy-free diets, scientists have explored reducing greenhouse gas emissions by feeding cows seaweed, with some red seaweed species yielding reductions of about 80%.

  2. To ease water access struggles in regions where drought is exacerbated by climate change, fog harvesting strategies, such as sophisticated dehumidifiers or draping plastic sheets on trees for moisture to condense onto at night, have been implemented to collect clean water.

  3. The construction of clam gardens can provide habitats for various species, thereby increasing biodiversity threatened by climate change, and the eventual death of clams releases shell fragments into the ocean, whose minerals help offset climate change-driven ocean acidification.

  4. Placing white paint or solar panels in areas frequently exposed to sunlight, such as roofs, reflects the sun's thermal energy back into space or harnesses it to generate electricity.

  5. In the Netherlands, some buildings have been built to move vertically with changes in sea level, while still linked to utilities via stretchy, flexible connections, which can help residents in areas prone to flooding and rising sea levels.
