  1. Synthetic textiles produce secondary microplastics—those released from the physical breakdown of larger pieces of plastic—during wash cycles, where mechanical and chemical stress break off fibers, while tires produce them through their erosion from contact with roads.

  2. City dust, which accounts for 24% of the ocean's secondary microplastic pollution, consists of fragments of building coatings, synthetic footwear, and other human-made objects that have broken off due to weathering and abrasion.

  3. Secondary microplastics are released from road markings, which involve substances such as polymer tape, marine coatings applied to seagoing vessels for protection, and personal care products,
