Most plastics are not biodegradable because breaking their chemical bonds requires temperatures lethal to most microbes, and these organisms have not been exposed to plastic long enough to evolve the necessary enzymes.

Findings

Additional insights we found via TED-Ed

  1. Microorganisms break down large substances into digestible materials using enzymes—proteins that reduce the amount of energy needed to break specific chemical bonds—but it takes millions of years for these enzymes to be created, and plastic has only been around since the 1950s.

  2. Because plastics are formed by polymerizing various chemicals under extreme conditions, depolymerizing them into their constituent molecules requires large amounts of energy or powerful enzymes that can dramatically lower the activation threshold to that of everyday temperatures, where most microbes thrive.

  3. Ideonella sakaiensis, a bacterium discovered in recycling plant sludge in 2016, was the first organism shown to possess enzymes capable of breaking down PET, a type of plastic, and researchers continue to search for microbes to expand bioremediation efforts to other plastics.
