  1. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is the most commonly used plastic for its toughness, moisture- and gas-blocking properties, and high heat resistance, making it used in bottles, jars, combs, and prepared food trays.

  2. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is the most commonly recycled plastic, provides strength and excellent chemical resistance, and is used in compost containers, bleach bottles, and motor oil containers.

  3. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the most hazardous plastic, offering long-term stability for plumbing pipes, rain gutters, carpet backing, and window and door frames.

  4. Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) provides flexibility and good transparency for items such as plastic wrap, grocery bags, squeezable bottles, and bubble wrap.

  5. Polypropylene (PP) is a hard and flexible plastic with enough heat resistance for its use in hot food containers, thermal vests, and certain car parts.

  6. Polystyrene (PS), commonly known as Styrofoam, has been used for disposable cups and food packaging, though it is highly toxic and can be affected by fats, solvents, and heat.

  7. Other plastic varieties—labeled with a 7 within the recycling symbol—include those made from a combination of plastic types and can be found in CDs, DVDs, eyeglasses, and dental sealants.
