View the estimated decomposition times for various everyday plastic products, which often fragment into smaller microplastics as molecular bonds are weakened by sunlight.

Additional insights we found via Visual Capitalist

  1. Rather than being broken down into simpler molecules that can be consumed by smaller microorganisms in the food web, plastics become brittle and crack into smaller pieces as photodegradation reduces their flexibility.

  2. Fishing lines can linger in the environment for centuries and can be fatal if they entangle or are ingested by wildlife, while cigarette butts can decompose within a handful of years.

  3. Even with recycling, most plastic ends up in landfills and contributes to pollution of land, air, and oceans because it can be recycled only once or twice before becoming unusable.
