  1. The map, released in 2023, underscores that wherever researchers search for forever chemicals, they turn out to be present—exposing humans and hundreds of species across the globe to these chemicals, which have been linked to numerous health effects.

  2. The biological half-lives of these chemicals, meaning the time it takes them to break down by half, vary depending on the forever chemical, but for the four most commonly studied substances, it can take from around 2 to 8 years.

  3. Freshwater fish are often contaminated by these chemicals, and research from this group, EWG, has concluded that the levels are so high in most freshwater fish that even infrequent consumption would boost the amount of PFAS in the human body.
