Forever chemical contamination in public water systems is an ongoing problem, but water managers are required to slash the chemical levels in the water by 2029, or by 2031 under an extension proposed by the Trump administration.
PFAS levels can be reduced in water through interventions including activated carbon filters, ion exchange treatment, and reverse osmosis.
If individuals are trying to limit PFAS exposure in their lives, expert recommendations include installing water filters certified to treat PFAS contamination and checking the PFAS Central website for PFAS-free cosmetics and other household products.
