Typically, warm and hot water are needed to loosen fats and oils from clothing and provide the energy for chemical reactions that break down stains, but specialized proteins can lower the energy required for these interactions.
Alongside these enzymes, detergents contain surfactants, which bind to dirt particles and pull them into the water, and anti-redeposition agents to keep debris suspended rather than sticking to other clothing.
Lower-temperature washes help reduce utility bills by reducing the need to use electricity or gas for heating water.
