Disconnecting from technology can be made easier by turning off notifications, making nonessential apps and devices harder to access, and opting for 'dumb' devices, such as a film camera.

Additional insights we found via The Vergecast

  1. Many devices and apps are designed to be addictive, so using them less may require adding "friction," such as placing phones, tablets, and laptops in a place you have to to walk to use them, or moving distracting apps to other screens and embedding them in folders.

  2. Users can set a boundary that only calls or texts from specific individuals require immediate attention by disabling all other notifications, reducing the need to access a device unless it's important.

  3. Because many devices are connected to the internet at all times, including smartwatches, reverting to more traditional, single-function technologies can prevent one task from serving as a gateway back to scrolling and posting.

  4. Families can institute a "tech time" or common tech area for device use to more easily monitor and manage screentime.

  5. Controlling Wi-Fi access, either by turning routers off or by going to locations where it is unavailable, such as a beach or campsite, can also force a person to disconnect, especially if they are entertained by non-electronic activities, such as reading physical books or playing board games.
