  1. Parents often don't want to rob their children of an experience other kids are having, but social psychologist Jonathan Haidt suggests that as a society, we could create a new normal in which no kids have smartphones before high school and no social media until age 16. These steps, he argues, could better safeguard teen brain development and mental health.

  2. Adults, Haidt contends, should also turn off social media notifications on their phones and avoid short-form videos and other related quick-hit stimuli.

  3. Breaks from a social media-heavy existence could involve a weekly shutdown—a time free of smartphones to reconnect with yourself, your friends, and your community—or longer breaks to reset mentally.
