In this live interview with phone-free childhood advocate Jonathan Haidt, host Ava Smithing—of Gen-Z—presses Haidt on why there isn't more of a research consensus on the mental health implications of social media for children, among other contentious topics.

Haidt says that beyond mental health, issues with sleep and attention span, as well as addiction, are his biggest concerns about social media use in youth. "Most people have a device addiction," he says.
Gen Z would not be affected by bans on youth use, contends Smithing, so she asks why there isn't more focus on design-based legislation—meaning requiring designs on platforms that prioritize safety for kids and adults alike. Haidt says that would be a huge lift, legislatively.
Black girls are the heaviest users of social media, according to Haidt.
