  1. Because the force of gravity varies with distance, different regions of an extended body will experience different amounts of gravitational attraction from a host object, such as a planet or star, and these variations, or tidal forces, can stretch the body apart.

  2. The boundary between whether matter can coalesce into a larger object or remain as a collection of smaller pieces experiencing insufficient gravity to break apart further is known as the Roche limit after French astronomer Édouard Roche.

  3. Moons can only be found beyond the Roche limit of the host planet, which varies based on the planet's radius and the densities of the planet and the moon.

  4. In binary star systems where two stars mutually orbit, if one star is large enough that it extends beyond the Roche limit, its matter can "break" away and funnel onto the companion, which may re-initiate fusion in dead stars.
