While the leading hypothesis for the moon's origin involves a Mars-sized object called Theia striking ancient Earth and forming from the resulting debris, it cannot explain why lunar isotope abundances match Earth.

Computer simulations suggest that the moon should be primarily composed of debris left over from Theia, rather than from Earth, yet moon and Earth rocks have nearly identical compositions.
A more direct impact between ancient Earth and Theia, or one where Earth and Theia were of similar mass, would result in a more substantial mix between the two, producing compositions that would be expected to more closely match.
