Because gravity varies with distance, different parts of Io experience different magnitudes of Jupiter's gravitational force, resulting in stretching and squeezing that generate friction within the moon's interior.
An analysis of observations from NASA's Juno spacecraft found that, when scaled to its entirety, the average energy released from Io's interior is up to 30 times that of Earth.
