Because the half of Earth that faces the sun is larger than the area of the shadow cast by the moon during a solar eclipse, observers may experience a total, annular, or partial eclipse.

Additional insights we found via NASA

  1. Observers of a total eclipse are completely within the shadow cast by the moon and may momentarily remove their eclipse glasses to view the sun's corona, our outer atmosphere, as a glow around the moon.

  2. If the moon is at its farthest point from the Earth during a solar eclipse, it will appear smaller and be unable to fully block the sun, producing an annular solar eclipse with a bright ring around a dark disk.

  3. If an observer on Earth is only partly within the moon's shadow during a solar eclipse, they will see a partial solar eclipse, with the sun appearing as a crescent.
