Solar eclipses are a cosmic coincidence because the moon is 400 times smaller than the sun but 400 times closer to Earth, allowing it to completely block sunlight.

Additional insights we found via The Planets

  1. Although there are 2-5 solar eclipses each year, the last total solar eclipse will occur within the next 1.2 billion years because the moon is gradually drifting away from Earth, making it appear smaller in the sky.

  2. During a solar eclipse, observers within the umbra, or dark core of the moon's shadow, see a total eclipse, while those in the lighter outer portion of the moon's shadow—the penumbra—see a partial eclipse.

  3. When the moon is at its farthest in its orbit around the Earth, it is too small to completely block the sun during a solar eclipse and produces an antumbra—a shadow within which observers see an annular solar eclipse, or a glowing red ring around an otherwise obscured sun.

  4. Total solar eclipses can last from 10 seconds to 7.5 minutes, giving scientists limited time to collect data from the sun's faint, outer atmosphere, or corona, which is normally difficult to observe amid the sun's bright surface.

  5. The path of totality, where the sun is completely blocked by the moon, spans a maximum width of 269 kilometers (167 miles).
