Eclipse glasses protect the eyes from overexposure to the sun's ultraviolet, blue, and infrared light, as a person's instinct to look away from the sun is diminished when it's partly blocked.

When looking directly at the sun for long periods, whether or not a solar eclipse is ongoing, the cumulative dose of sunlight can cause permanent retinal damage, and this dosage can be amplified as pupils dilate to compensate for the darker environment created by the eclipse.
Eclipse glasses, which should display an ISO number of 12312-2 to meet a safety standard set by the International Organization for Standardization, work by filtering out damaging portions of sunlight using a specialized filter coated in aluminum and a partially absorbing substrate to compensate for any scratches in the metal.
During a solar eclipse, sunglasses, polarizers, or other lenses and filters should not be used as a replacement for eclipse glasses, which should not be removed if any portion of the sun is visible.
