The Proba-3 mission used advanced navigation and positioning technologies to align the dual spacecraft in space, such that a shadow cast by a 1.4-meter (4.6-foot) disk covered an optical instrument 150 meters (492 feet) away, despite the shadow at that distance being only 8 centimeters (3.15 inches) across.
The sun's corona is normally impossible to view directly due to the star's surface brightness, but scientists involved with the Proba-3 mission hope that the data collected will help build a better understanding of solar wind—the high-energy particles continuously released by the sun.
