Over thousands of years, the frequency of solar eclipses is greatest around the Arctic and Antarctic Circles and lowest near the equator.

Near the poles, the sun path runs along the horizon for extended periods throughout the year, increasing the window during which the moon can be seen crossing in front of the sun.
The Earth's curvature also stretches the moon's shadow, increasing the likelihood of those at the poles being in the path of an eclipse.
While simulations show that every location on Earth eventually experiences some type of eclipse, the time between them can range from a couple of years to over 1,000 years.
