Some updates include obvious changes, like the removal of "telegraph" and the addition of "computer".
The study found that words that fell into categories of tangible items, such as objects, the body, food, farming, and living things, all saw declines in usage from the 1950s to now. Words like apple, fork, soap, clay, hammer, and weave were each removed from the updated list of essential English terms.
The author believes the shift from discussing the tangible to the more abstract reflects how life moved further away from tools and personal objects to national or global institutions, larger systems, and expansive ideas.
