When testing climate models, computer simulations suggest that Middle-earth should be covered by forests—matching a description in 'The Lord of the Rings'—and that Westeros's long winters in 'Game of Thrones' may be linked to a wobbling planet.

  1. Information such as topography—elevation—and bathymetry—ocean depth—from J.R.R. Tolkien's maps, along with details such as distance, times, and wind direction, produce a climate resembling that of Western Europe and North Africa, which both served as geographic inspirations for "The Lord of the Rings."

  2. The predicted forest cover is also consistent with Elrond's claim that a squirrel could travel from the Shire to Dunland without touching the ground.

  3. The Misty Mountains of Middle-earth result from when winds push moist air from the west over the mountains, causing water vapor to rise and condense into rain and snow.

  4. In "Game of Thrones," the years-long winter would require an inconsistent, unstable tilt of the planet away from the sun for long periods of time.

  5. Although Earth's moon stabilizes our tilt, "Game of Thrones"'s source material states that a second moon was lost to the sun in the past, which may have introduced the necessary wobble.
