The origin of the term STEM—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—at the NSF
In 2001, Judith Ramaley coined the acronym while director of the National Science Foundation to replace "SMET," which was considered awkward-sounding. Since then, additional elements have been incorporated in various settings to modify the acronym, such as STEAM-based education, which includes art.
