Built in 1817 for $7M (nearly $200M today), the Erie Canal was America's first major infrastructure project, connecting the Hudson River at Albany to Lake Erie at Buffalo.
Nearly 50,000 workers dug the entire canal by hand using picks and gunpowder, guided largely by self-taught amateurs, including teachers, judges, and surveyors.
The canal's 83 locks-each operable by a single person-moved boats through a 565-foot elevation change and helped cut freight charges by 90% on key routes.
Nearly two centuries after its completion, the canal is still navigable, with thousands of recreational vessels passing through historic towns and restored locks each year.
