Richard Preston's 1994 book The Hot Zone brought knowledge of Ebola to the masses. But, beyond the poor portrayals of the science and the scientists, the book fostered fearmongering about Ebola, with portrayals of "liquefying," "dissolving," and "bleeding out."
These falsehoods about Ebola have persisted for decades and appear to be reinvigorated with every new emergence of the disease.
