  1. The case arose when President John Adams rushed through 42 judicial appointments in his final weeks, and the incoming Jefferson administration refused to deliver William Marbury's commission.

  2. After Marbury sued for his commission, Chief Justice John Marshall ruled that although Marbury was entitled to his commission, the law allowing him to sue directly in the Supreme Court was unconstitutional.

  3. This decision established the doctrine of judicial review, the court's power to invalidate acts of Congress.

  4. More than 80 countries have since adopted some form of judicial review.
