Walt Whitman wrote a poem for the official celebration of America's 100th anniversary, but was not invited to read at the event.

  1. The poet wrote "Song of the Exposition" in 1875, hoping it might earn him an invitation for the 1876 celebration in Philadelphia, perhaps even to read it in the ceremony's opening remarks.

  2. Whitman originally wrote the poem for the 40th Annual Exhibition of the American Institute in New York and published it in 1871, but he reworked the verse to reference Philadelphia and the Centennial Exposition.

  3. Whitman didn't receive an invite, though; instead, the Centennial Exposition welcomed three other poets: Bayard Taylor, Sidney Lanier, and John Greenleaf Whittier.
