A look at anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria, which do not produce oxygen
Rather than using water to produce organic compounds and release oxygen, purple and green sulfur bacteria take up hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, and light to produce water, elemental sulfur, and a carbohydrate. Other organisms can take up various molecules and elements, such as iron, which can replenish the electrons in pigments involved in light-dependent reactions.
