With the rising popularity of compact discs, Sony found itself with a surplus of this equipment while designing a portable battery for its handheld camcorder.
Managers in Sony's battery division realized that the manufacturing lines producing sheets of film could instead produce electrode sheets.
These sheets could be stacked with a polymer separator between them, then cut and wound into jelly rolls of different sizes.
This method saved the company equipment costs and has since been the standard for the manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries—a term Sony popularized in its Handycam advertising in 1991.
