In the early 1900s, Fourth of July celebrations were so dangerous that a reform movement emerged to make them safer.

Additional insights we found via Smithsonian Magazine

  1. In 1903 alone, 466 people died and 4,449 were injured from Fourth of July accidents, with two-thirds of explosion-related deaths caused by tetanus from fireworks shrapnel.

  2. A Pennsylvania lawyer named Charles Pennypacker became one of the movement's most vocal advocates, urging Americans to swap fireworks for cake, deviled eggs, and hammocks.

  3. This earned Pennypacker a retaliatory fireworks attack outside his home on July 3, 1904.

  4. Cities across the country passed ordinances banning toy pistols, firecrackers, and explosives, while others launched supervised community celebrations to give citizens safer alternatives.
