Keaton based the film on a nonfiction book called "The Great Locomotive Chase" by William Pittinger, who fought for the Union army; Keaton, however, decided to turn the story on its head, telling it from the perspective of someone on the Confederate side.
Keaton said he was inspired by DW Griffith's "Birth of a Nation," the 1915 Civil War epic that lionized the Ku Klux Klan.
Nationwide, critics panned the film for its inaccuracies, though it was popular with some who pushed the Lost Cause of the Confederacy myth, which argued that the Civil War was not about slavery, but about states' rights.
Decades later, though, the film would be reevaluated for its technical mastery, with some, including filmmaker Orson Welles, ranking it among the greatest films ever made.
