Scientists keep track of time via light absorbed by cesium and strontium atoms
These absorptions happen in cycles, where one second is defined as 9,192,631,770 cycles of cesium atom radiation. Strontium atoms can be used to make clocks that do not gain or lose a second in 15 billion years.
