The Beatles' US label rejected the band's first two singles

Additional insights we found via Billboard

  1. Although the quartet was already a hit in the UK, Capitol Records turned down the opportunity to release "Please Please Me" and "From Me to You."

  2. The label instead licensed them to a smaller independent label in Chicago, though they garnered little airplay and were considered failures.

  3. A third single, "She Loves You," was licensed to a small Philadelphia label and also flopped, including an embarrassing feature on the TV show American Bandstand, where the audience mocked a photo of the group.

  4. It wasn't until the British press began regularly covering "Beatlemania," the frenzied and sudden popularity of the band in the UK, that American papers—and, eventually, radio—started paying attention.
