British archaeologist Leonard Woolley discovered five game boards while excavating the Royal Cemetery of Ur in the 1920's. At the time, nobody understood how to play the game.
In the 1980s, a curator at the British Museum discovered that a clay tablet from the second century BCE was a set of instructions for the Royal Game of Ur.
Players race to reach the end of the board, rolling dice to determine their moves.
Some squares on the board featured zodiac signs and were said to predict players' fortunes.
