How the body produces its own opioids

Opioids act on the body's own opioid receptor system. The endogenous opioid system comprises four molecule receptor types found throughout the body. When activated, these receptor types trigger the release of dopamine and suppression of noradrenaline, neurotransmitters, respectively, associated with reward and alertness. This opioid system helps regulate emotions, and its disruption is linked to neuropsychiatric conditions, including depression, PTSD, and Alzheimer's disease.
