Known as the "mother of Hubble," Nancy Roman credits her mother with inspiring her interest in astronomy at a young age by showing her constellations and auroras, and this interest led her to start an astronomy club at school when she was 11.
Roman's high school counselor questioned her desire to take additional mathematics coursework, with the future NASA executive recalling that she did not receive any encouragement until her junior year of college.
During her doctoral studies at the University of Chicago, Roman identified more than 200 stars that originated in the Ursa Major cluster, but her research lacked consistent support amid a thesis adviser who went six months without speaking with her.
Roman was hired at NASA in 1959 as though she were a recent PhD, even though she had six years of postdoctoral experience and international recognition for her research, because her prior work, given its low salary, was not considered professional experience.
