As the first female faculty member in the University of Chicago's Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Nancy Roman earned less than two-thirds of what her male counterparts earned.

Findings

Additional insights we found via University of Chicago

  1. After earning her doctorate in astronomy from the University of Chicago in 1949, Roman remained at the institution as a postdoc, instructor, and assistant professor to satisfy her interests in teaching and research.

  2. After being told, "We don’t discriminate against women. We can just get them for less," by her department chair and unable to secure a tenure-track faculty position, Roman left the University of Chicago for a position at the US Naval Research Laboratory, where she conducted radio astronomy work, including mapping the Milky Way galaxy.
