Recipients of the 1962 Federal Woman's Award included Allene James, who discovered food-thickening agent xanthan gum and a means of mass-producing blood plasma substitute dextran, and Thelma Dunn, who made advances in human cancer research with her work with mice.
Margaret Brass, an attorney at the Department of Justice, Katherine Bracken, the Director of the Office of Central American and Panamanian Affairs, and Evelyn Harrison, Deputy Director of the Bureau of Programs and Standards at the Civil Service Commission, were also awarded.
