The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope—the first major NASA space telescope named after a woman—is expected to survey 12% of the sky in 17 months, a feat that would take the Hubble Space Telescope 1,700 years.

Findings

Additional insights we found via Dr. Becky

  1. The Roman telescope is expected to refine existing models of dark energy, which drives the accelerated expansion of the universe, by detecting about 21,700 supernovae used to measure the universe's rate of expansion—about 10 times more supernovae than all previous telescopes, combined.

  2. By imaging more than 10,000 brown dwarfs—failed stars that resemble massive Jupiters—the Roman telescope is expected to provide insights into planetary models and what makes a celestial object become a star.

  3. The Roman telescope's microlensing survey can detect exoplanets about as small as Mars, and data collected on these objects will help improve astronomers' understanding of planet formation.

  4. Through broad surveys of the sky, the Roman telescope is expected to find about 160,000 gravitational lenses—objects massive enough to significantly bend space and affect the paths of light—which can be used to identify and map the distribution of dark matter.
